GCSE Sketchbook: II

Details: Exam Sketchbook

'Details' was the final project of my fine art GCSE course which I completed in 2017. I ended up receiving an A* as a final grade for this course and had been getting top level A grades throughout the whole course. I started off with artist research and studies as usual and then came up with three ideas for a final piece based on the artists I researched. I chose one to develop into a final piece during the final exam. We had a 10 hour long exam in which we were to complete our final piece. I got really worried that I wouldn't have enough time to finish so I worked hard and actually completed my final piece in around 3-4 hours. My final piece is three portraits of my Mother from different angles and using a different medium for each. I used oil paint, oil pastel and chalk pastel for each portrait. The painting is on 68cm x 44cm wood board.

Looking back on my final piece now, I think it would have looked a lot better if I had just done the three portraits in oil paint. It would have made the painting flow better and create a more appealing piece. I think, since the three mediums are do different, they produced three different outcomes. I should have planned and experimented more so I could have known what it was going to look like before going into the exam. I am still very happy with the way this piece turned out and in future, I might repaint the oil pastel and chalk pastel with oil paint so that I can show how my painting style has changed since then and make this a better and more cohesive painting.
